Coach promises vs reality

Parent Question

Advice sought, please!
My 9 year old little girl is on a flight two club team. She’s been on this team since July. Prior to that, she was on a different club team from March-June. That was her first club team ever and it was fine. Coach yelled a lot and several other players left the team effectively dismantling the team. Prior to March, she was on an extra team for over a year and a half. That team was great. It was sort of a perfect fit while it lasted. Then girls started to leave to go to club and the coach could not find new players for a year so we too left because playing with 6 girls was just too hard.
The problem *now* is that this new team is just ugh! She never gets play time because there are 12 girls and it’s not like the team is so great and my daughter is so beneath them. The team as a whole is still developing and loses most games. My daughter has a lot to work on, no doubt. But I don’t know how the heck she’s supposed to gain that experience if she plays 5-10 minutes per 60 minute game! She attends every single practice while a lot of the other girls miss. She’s also in futsol and she regularly attends agility training with a private coach for ball control, foot work, speed, and skills.
The thing the has me the MOST upset is that the coach promised he would play her and develop her if we joined his team. He knew she had only ever really played defense. He has never played her on defense once. He plays her forward, middle, and wing. He told us she’s lost and doesn’t know how to play those positions but he would teach her. Well he hasn’t. Practice is just drills, no scrimmage, no personal coaching. Games are a joke. She’s lucky if she plays 5 minutes.
They participated in a tournament this weekend and killed it! They made it to the finals. They lost the final game (4/5 is awesome, though, and they took home second place!). She played 3-5 minutes at each game and the final game he put her in 50 seconds before half time and never played her again. She left the tournament a winner, but felt like a loser because she hadn’t even contributed to getting the metal since she didn’t get to play!
What would ya’ll do?

Soccer Club Navigator Answer

Thank you for sharing all of this. I can hear how much you care about your daughter’s growth, confidence, and love for the game—and how frustrating it is to watch her not get the opportunity she was promised. You’re right to be upset. You’ve invested time, energy, and resources, and you’re holding up your end of the deal—showing up, working hard, staying committed—yet the environment isn’t delivering what was agreed upon. It’s not fair.

Let’s break this down into the real issues at play and strategic options moving forward:

What’s Happening Behind the Scenes?

Roster Size & Playing Time Politics:A 12-player roster at 9U is too big if a coach intends to play everyone meaningfully. Coaches at this level often prioritize “winning” in tournaments to boost team/club reputation, which can result in some players (often the quieter or less experienced ones) being sidelined.

Development vs. Winning (Lip Service vs. Reality):The coach told you he’d develop her, but actions show his focus is results-driven. He’s not investing the teaching time your daughter needs to grow into new positions. The promise of development was likely more about filling a roster than a true development plan.

No In-Practice Position Development:If they’re not doing game-like scenarios or teaching positional awareness during practice, your daughter has no path to learn and improve in-game understanding. This isn’t a “she needs to earn it” situation—she’s being set up to fail by a lack of structure.

Your Options:

1. Address It Directly with the Coach (Short-Term Attempt)If you’d like to give this team one more chance before making a bigger move, you can have a calm, clear conversation with the coach. Frame it around your daughter’s development needs—not playing time demands.

I can draft a message for you, but here’s the key tone:

Reinforce your daughter’s commitment and work ethic.

Acknowledge the coach’s goals.

Ask for a clear plan for how she will learn and contribute in games.

Express that she feels discouraged, and you want to ensure she has a path to growth.

Example Message (I can refine this for you later if you’d like!):

“Coach [Name], thank you for all the work you’re doing with the team. [Daughter’s Name] loves soccer and has been working hard in practice, futsal, and private training to develop her skills. We joined your team with the understanding that she’d have the opportunity to learn new positions and grow her game IQ. Right now, she’s struggling because she’s not getting much game time, and practice drills aren’t giving her the positional guidance she needs. We would appreciate your thoughts on how she can work toward meaningful contributions in games, even in small steps, so she can feel she’s progressing and helping the team. Thank you so much for your time and any guidance you can give.”

2. Start Exploring Other Options (Mid-Term)Given the pattern, it’s reasonable to begin quietly exploring:

Other clubs with smaller rosters or a better development philosophy.

Rec league or alternative “hybrid” teams where she can get heavy minutes but still receive higher-level training (futsal, extra skills clinics).

Private small-group sessions with a developmental focus to keep her growing while you search for a better team fit.

3. Prepare for an Exit (If Needed)If after addressing it, nothing changes (or you already know this coach’s mind is made up), it’s okay to prioritize playing time and joy over “prestige club” status right now. She’s 9. The most important thing is that she LOVES the game and gets to play. She needs touches on the ball in real games.

Bottom Line:You’re not overreacting. Your daughter is doing her part; the environment isn’t. It’s okay to advocate. It’s okay to explore better fits. You’re not “giving up” — you’re strategizing for her long-term growth.

Would you like me to draft a message to the coach for you to send? Also, would you like me to suggest what to look for in a better-fit team when you start scouting?

League affiliations vs Training

Parent Question

We have an ECNL program in our town and our daughter is actively in the development league now. Shes been a part of it for about 3 years now. She’s in U11 now so 2 years before ECNL tryouts. I have seen good growth and development however there is another program in our town that does NOT have affiliations and the training seems to be better. How important is the affiliation vs training for long term goals?

Soccer Club Navigator Answer

This is a great question—and it’s something many soccer parents face when weighing development paths for their child. Let’s break it down into two key factors: Affiliation vs. Quality of Training, especially considering long-term goals like ECNL, college recruitment, or even higher aspirations.

1. ECNL Affiliation: Why It MattersPathway to Showcase Events & College Exposure: ECNL teams get automatic access to top-level showcases where scouts from colleges (and sometimes national programs) frequently attend.

Structured Competition Level: Being part of ECNL ensures your daughter competes against top-tier players across regions, which is invaluable for growth and visibility.

Prestige & Networking: ECNL clubs often have relationships with college coaches, which can make introductions and recruiting processes smoother.

2. Quality of Training: The Foundation of DevelopmentTechnical & Tactical Development Is Everything at U11-U13: The years before ECNL (U11-U13) are critical “golden years” for skill acquisition. Superior coaching and training now will have a bigger long-term impact than just being on a prestigious team.

Better Coaches > Fancy Name at Young Ages: A non-affiliated club with better coaching, smaller player-to-coach ratios, and focus on individual growth could develop your daughter into a stronger player who can stand out in ECNL later.

Affiliation Without Development = Limited Long-Term Progress: Simply being on an ECNL-affiliated team won’t guarantee skill development. The player must be actively coached, mentored, and challenged.

How to Balance It?

Here’s a recommended strategy:Focus on Best Training Environment NOW (U11-U13): Prioritize where she’s getting the best technical coaching—even if it’s not ECNL-affiliated yet.

Plan for Transition into ECNL (U13-U14): Ensure that by the time ECNL tryouts arrive, she’s technically advanced enough to make an impact on those rosters.

Hybrid Model (Optional): Some families do private training or supplemental clinics with the higher-level coaches while staying on the ECNL track.

Talk to ECNL Coaches Now: Ask them about their long-term development plans for players at U11/U12. Sometimes the better trainers are brought in later.

Bottom Line:At U11-U13, training quality is more important than affiliation. But as she approaches U13/U14, you’ll want to ensure she’s on a pathway that leads into competitive ECNL opportunities. Being technically superior at 13 will open more doors than merely being on an ECNL-affiliated roster early on.

Would you like me to help you create a long-term development plan (skills, training, timeline) for ECNL & college recruitment readiness?

Bench player recruitment chances

Parent Question

My ECNL-regional player is a junior and wants to play d3. my player is high achieving accademically but is a bench player. She is no worse than her teammates but just she is put on bench.

Should i convince her not to play college soccer since she is on bench and even if the coaches come to see her games she might not be playing? Also she doesnt have a lot of good highlights.

Did anyone in this group who had a bench player got recruited? Does it on bench mean you basically have no chance?

Soccer Club Navigator Answer

You’re not alone in this situation—and it absolutely does NOT mean your daughter has no chance. Being a bench player, especially in ECNL-Regional (ECRL), makes the recruiting process more challenging, but it does not disqualify her from playing college soccer if that’s truly what she wants.

Let’s break it down:

1. Bench Player ≠ No ChanceMany college coaches—especially at D3 schools—care far more about a player’s potential fit (character, academics, work ethic) and development trajectory than whether she starts every club game. D3 programs often look for late bloomers, smart players who might not have peaked early but can grow in college.

Coaches know club politics, roster dynamics, and that not every talented player is a starter. They also recruit off training sessions, ID camps, and personal recommendations, not just games.

2. Game Visibility WorkaroundsYes, it’s frustrating if coaches come and she doesn’t play. But this can be mitigated:

ID Camps at Target Schools: This is where she can control visibility. Coaches watch everyone.

Individual Showcases (like Exact, College Showcase combines): More reps, more coach interaction.

Training Footage: Not ideal, but you can film her in training, small-sided games, or even a 1v1 technical showcase video to supplement limited highlights.

3. Playing Time vs. College FitIf your daughter’s heart is in playing D3, and she’s willing to work for it, the bench status is an obstacle, not a wall. It will require proactive outreach to coaches, crafting a personal story of growth, perseverance, and academic/athletic fit.

But if her desire to play in college is lukewarm and the bench situation is demotivating her, it’s okay to reevaluate the priority of playing college soccer. It should be her decision, guided by what she wants her college experience to look like.

4. Have Bench Players Been Recruited?Yes. It’s not common, but it happens—especially with self-advocating players and supportive clubs that help place their athletes. The key difference-maker is visibility through ID camps and coach communication, not just game play.

Next Steps (If She Still Wants It):Identify 10–15 D3 schools she loves for academics and environment.

Register for their ID camps.

Film any footage possible (training, technical, or games).

Craft personal emails to coaches highlighting her academic strengths, soccer goals, and growth mindset.

Ask club coach or DOC for a genuine reference or to advocate for her, if possible.

Would you like me to draft a sample email you can send to a D3 coach introducing her situation in a positive, proactive way?
